Introduction
In last week issue of The Energy Letter, I discussed my January prediction that the average natural gas price in the US would be higher this year than last year. While that prediction is looking pretty safe because of the extremely cold winter, I also predicted that rent and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude prices will average less in 2014 than in 2013.Let see how that one is faring.
I also predicted lower oil prices for 2013, and ended up being only partially right. In 2013 the average price of Brent crude was 2.8 percent lower than in 2012 with an average of $108.56/barrel (bbl). West Texas Intermediate (WTI) was up 4 percent in 2013 to an average daily price of $97.98/bbl. So in 2013 I was right on the direction of Brent, and wrong on the direction of WTI. (I also predicted that the differential between the two would decline, which it did).
As I write this, the price of WTI has so far averaged $97.75 this year (only three cents lower than last year average), while the price of Brent has averaged $108.55 (a penny below last year average). At this point this year average is nearly identical to last year average. But with WTI presently trading at $102.55 and Brent at $109 it won take long for average prices to rise above my prediction.

The Q2 2014 earnings report for mattress stock Select Comfort Corp (NASDAQ: SCSS), a potential peer or competitor of other mattress players like Mattress Firm Holding Corp (NASDAQ: MFRM) and Tempur Sealy International Inc (NYSE: TPX), is due out on Wednesday after the market closes. Aside from the Select Comfort Corp earnings report, it should be said that the estimated release date for the Mattress Firm Holding Corp Q2 2014 earnings report is the the week of September 4th while the estimated date for the Tempur Sealy International Inc Q2 2014 earnings report is the week of July 21st. And while the last earnings report from Select Comfort Corp did not cause shares to move much, shares plunged 19% in January aspreliminary fourth quarter results reignited concerns over growth going forward. This came after a 25% plunge after an October earnings reportbadly missed expectations.

But Mattress Firm has to deal with competitors that are highly motivated to thwart its growth plans. On one hand, Tempur-Pedic's (NYSE: TPX ) now-completed acquisition of Sealy has broadened the former high-end mattress specialist's product line to cover more of the lower-end business that Mattress Firm has historically focused on. At the same time, Select Comfort (NASDAQ: SCSS ) has managed to take over its primary competitor in the air-filled mattress market, giving it sole control of that segment of the overall mattress market.

Shares of Select Comfort Corp. (SCSS) plunged 24% to $18.39 on heavy volume after the maker of Sleep Number beds reported disappointing third-quarter results and cut its outlook for the year.

Despite every fiber of my being telling me to not get involved in the schoolyard fight between L&L Energy, Inc. A sane and unbiased observation has to be injected into the mix here.

Well, as it turns out, the snake that bit L&L Energy, Inc. (NASDAQ:LLEN) and Sovereign Lithium Inc. (OTCMKTS:SLCO) didn't end up biting Makism 3D Corp. (OTCMKTS:MDDD). And in retrospect, that's probably how it should be. Indeed, the fact that MDDD didn't even come close to suffering the same fate as SLCO or LLEN did may be the biggest assurance Makism 3D fans could hope for that the company is everything it says it is.

1. Sirius XM will close higher on the week
Sirius XM Radio (NASDAQ: SIRI ) reports on Tuesday morning, and it's easy to bank on a strong report. Auto sales have been strong in recent months, and that's the lifeblood of new subscribers for the satellite-radio provider. Sirius XM has also been providing conservative guidance in recent quarters, leading to blowout performances that force the media giant to revise its outlook higher. - [By WWW.DAILYFINANCE.COM]
Paul Sancya/APAlan Mulally is joining Google's board of directors. There were plenty of winners and losers this week in the business world, as a software giant announced 18,000 layoffs and a social networking speedster made a shrewd acquisition that should help its site become more viral. Here's a rundown of the week's best and worst. LinkedIn (LNKD) -- Winner For many LinkedIn registered users, the career-oriented social networking site is one that they turn to only if they're looking for work or endorsing a friend who's looking. Requests for approving new connections are as far as many go in immersing themselves in the LinkedIn experience. That could all change after LinkedIn acquired Newsle this week. Newsle takes contacts from a user's Facebook and Twitter pages and scans the Internet for news alerts. It's easy to see how Newsle can make LinkedIn stickier, offering up notifications that could be valuable the next time the two connected LinkedIn users meet. This is a great example of a dot-com firm acquiring a small company that should easily grow in relevance under new ownership. Microsoft (MSFT) -- Loser The pink slips are raining hard at the world's largest software company. Microsoft will be cutting 18,000 employees in the coming months. Layoffs were expected after Microsoft acquired Nokia's (NOK) handset business, but that only explains a little more than two-thirds of the cuts. Microsoft will be recording pre-tax charges between $1.1 billion and $1.6 billion for the restructuring, but there isn't a clear picture on what the resulting savings will be. Morale is hard to sustain at a company when thousands of people are being let go. Google (GOOG) -- Winner We don't have to stray from Microsoft to segue into this next item. Last year it seemed as if the top candidate to be Microsoft's new CEO was outgoing Ford (F) CEO Alan Mulally. It didn't work out. Microsoft went for an internal hire. Well, this week Google announced that Mulally is being tapp

This split among industry segments has created some value opportunities as those companies with high exposure to PCs are very cheap. And while the move towards smart phones and tablets may continue, the PC is not dead — demand will pick up along with the economy.
