Hot Healthcare Technology Stocks To Watch For 2014

Earlier this year, the bond market freaked out when Ben Bernanke hinted that the easy-money party would be coming to an end. The yield on the three-year Treasury spiked from 0.3% in May to nearly 1% after Labor Day. Ben was clearly shocked by the market reaction to his comments, and he been careful to walk back, or larify, those remarks. Either way, the Fed hasn come near tapering since. But now Bernanke is nearly out the door, and Janet Yellen will soon be taking over. The latest conventional wisdom is that tapering will be coming this March. Wel see about that.

But the bond market has been in a sour mood again. On Thursday, the yield on the 30-year Treasury closed at 3.92% which is its highest yield since August 1, 2011. But here the key point: The recent sell-off in the bond market is quite different from what we saw this summer. Back then, it was the middle part of the yield curve that saw the biggest rise in rates. This reflected the belief that short-term interest rates were going to rise sooner than folks had expected.

    Don't make the wrong Choice
I predict that 2013 will be the return of the "staycation." In the depths of the recession, instead of taking expensive getaways, consumers chose simply to take time off work and stay home or locally. I think we have the perfect confluence of factors that could make life difficult for Choice Hotels International (NYSE: CHH  ) , operator of Comfort Inn, Comfort Suites, and a multitude of other mid-price-point hotels.

10-Year Cycle: The saving grace appears to be the 10-year cycle, which looks a bit different from the one- and four-year cycles. In short, the 10-year suggests the month will be more of a sideways affair. However, the bad news is: (a) the month is projected to end lower and (b) there is no real rally projection to speak of during the entire month.

Hot Healthcare Technology Stocks To Watch For 2014: First Trust Portfolios LP (QQEW)

First Trust NASDAQ-100 Equal Weighted Index Fund (the Fund) seeks investment results that correspond generally to the price and yield of an equity index called the NASDAQ-100 Equal Weighted Index (the Index). The Fund will normally invest at least 90% of its assets in common stocks that comprise the Index. The Index is the equal-weighted version of the NASDAQ-100 Index, which includes 100 of the largest non-financial securities listed on NASDAQ based on market capitalization. The Index contains the same securities as the NASDAQ-100 Index but each of the securities is initially set at a weight of 1% of the Index and is rebalanced quarterly. The Fund investment advisor is First Trust Advisors L.P. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Selena Maranjian]

Perhaps the best reason to pass up this otherwise solid ETF is its market-cap-based weighting, which gives much more influence to some companies than others. If you're not a strong believer in Apple's future, for example, you may not want more than 13% of your money in this ETF tied up in it. If you agree that equal weighting makes more sense in indexes, consider the First Trust NASDAQ-100 Equal Weighted ETF (NASDAQ: QQEW  ) , an ETF with the same stock focus as the PowerShares ETF that's also compelling in terms of fees and performance. It charges a bit more in fees, but it will give all its holdings an equal shot at boosting the value of the index.
