Bruce Berkowitz, the manager of the Fairholme Fund, recently posted an investor presentation discussing short term volatility and its impact on long term performance (if anybody knows about volatility, its Fairholme Fund investors who have stuck with Berkowitz over the past 18 months). In that slide deck, Mr. Berkowitz quotes something Seth Klarman said in April of 2011:
alueis not enough. Buying low is a startbut you need the patience, discipline and grit to buy lower, and still lower, if the opportunity presents itself, shutting out the extraneous noise coming from within the market and over the airwaves./p>
I think this quote relates to what I was talking about in my recent article discussing investing versus speculation:
n investment, by Warren definition, is the act of looking at an asset and determining to lay out some money now to get some more money back later on. Logically, this requires a couple of things on our end: we must know the current amount to be laid out (easy enough to find), but we must also be able to estimate the amount of money to be recovered in the future (a bit more difficult). This requires in-depth analysis that focuses on sustainable competitive advantages and conservatively estimates the future cash flow generation of the business, while avoiding outsized attention on short term fluctuations that are beyond the company control and unrelated to the fundamentals in question (for example, commodity cost volatility); collectively, this information can provide the basis upon which one can confidently invest in securities backed by a sizeable margin of safety./p>

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Jon C. Ogg]
Senior Housing Properties Trust (NYSE: SNH) has been an incredible dividend story. For years, it has sentsolid dividends to its shareholders. That dividend yield is now up to a whopping 7.2% or so. The problem is that the stock just hit a 52-week low again on Friday, and the stock is now not that far at all from being at a 2-year low of close to $20.00.
- [By Dan Caplinger]
Because of the requirement to pay out the vast majority of their income, REITs often have extremely high dividend payouts. Mortgage REITs ARMOUR Residential (NYSE: ARR ) and Chimera Investment (NYSE: CIM ) use leveraged strategies to produce yields well in excess of 10%, while Omega Healthcare (NYSE: OHI ) and Senior Housing Properties Trust (NYSE: SNH ) , which specialize in long-term care facilities and other properties catering to older residents, both have yields between 5% and 6%.
- [By Dan Caplinger]
Finally, you need to consider going where services you want are offered. For instance, health-care real-estate investment trusts Senior Housing Properties (NYSE: SNH ) , LTC Properties (NYSE: LTC ) , and Health Care REIT (NYSE: HCN ) , which recently acquired Sunrise Senior Living, all offer facilities in various places across the nation to provide for retirees who need health-care assistance in their living arrangements. But if your particular medical needs require specialists that are concentrated in particular cities, it's far more important for your health to be close to those specialists -- even if it means paying more in taxes.

One Internet gaming player that's starting to trend within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade is Sohu.com (SOHU), which is a Chinese online media, search, gaming, community and mobile service group. This stock has been in play with the bulls so far in 2013, with shares up sharply by 51%.
If you take a look at the chart for Sohu.com, you'll notice that this stock has been uptrending strong over the last two months, with shares moving higher from its low of $60.01 to its recent high of $73.28 a share. During that uptrend, shares of SOHU have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of SOHU within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade.
Traders should now look for long-biased trades in SOHU if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $73.28 a share to its gap down day high from October at $75.48 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 1.26 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then SOHU will set up to re-fill some of its previous gap down zone from October that started near $83 a share.
Traders can look to buy SOHU off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day moving average of $68.84 a share, or near more support at $67.50 a share. One can also buy SOHU off strength once it starts to take out those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.
