Top 10 Asian Companies To Watch For 2014

Over the last few years, companies that traditionally targeted the 1% have branched out. It makes a lot of sense, since the 1% is, by definition, a small group. Companies like Michael Kors (NYSE: KORS  ) and Tiffany (NYSE: TIF  ) have added smaller, less expensive -- but never "cheaper" -- products to their lineups. That small shift has resulted in a new luxury boomtown, with Tiffany stock up 43% over the last 12 months, while Kors has risen 62%.

With the rapid rise, some analysts have started looking for a drop, arguing that the growth has to slow as China pulls back on its own growth. There's no denying that the connection between Asian growth and luxury growth is close, but even domestic companies are seeing great growth. So should investors be worried, or is it time to double down on the high-end?

International growth and American hope
The growth of the Chinese middle class has resulted in a boom for Western companies. On most earnings calls these days, there's a heavy focus on expansion in China, Japan, and Korea. Last quarter, Tiffany opened another new location in China, and it now operates 66 stores in the region. Four more locations are coming this year, with Tiffany hoping that it can continue at the quick growth pace that it's already set in the region. Last quarter, comparable sales rose 9% in its Asia-Pacific region.

    2. Crumbs Cupcake stock continues to drop
Pour some sugar on me, baby, because the recent performance of cupcake-makin' chain Crumbs Bake Shop (NASDAQ: CRMB  ) hasn't tasted good for investors. The stock has fallen nearly 30% in the past month, dropped 13.4% in the last week, and dipped almost 2% Monday on growing doubts the company can even stay in business.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Daniel Gibbs]

One investment vehicle that any investor interested in income should be familiar with is the master limited partnership, or MLP, as theyare some of the best income investments available today. Most master limited partnerships are in the business of owning and operating oil and gas pipelines such as Kinder Morgan Energy Partners (NYSE: KMP  ) or Enbridge Energy Partners (NYSE: EEP  ) . However, there are some MLPs that actually operate oil and gas wells such as Breitburn Energy Partners (NASDAQ: BBEP  ) and Mid-Con Energy Partners (NASDAQ: MCEP  ) . In this article, we will discuss how these investments work and why they deserve a place in your income portfolio.

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

Oil and gas partnership BreitBurn Energy Partners (NASDAQ: BBEP  ) is out with its first quarter earnings. The company reported a loss of $0.38 a unit on revenue of $120.4 million. Both missed estimates, as analysts were expecting earnings of $0.15 a unit on revenue of $138.5 million. Adjusted EBITDA for the quarter came in at $64.1 million, which is up 4% from the first quarter of last year. However, this is down from last quarter, which saw adjusted EBITDA of $78 million.

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

Among its peers in the MLP and LLC space, LINN by far hedges the most production. BreitBurn Energy Partners (NASDAQ: BBEP  ) , for example, has hedged roughly 75% of its production through 2015, whereas LINN is 100% hedged through 2016. BreitBurn almost exclusively uses swaps as its hedge of choice. It's a similar story at Vanguard Natural Resources (NASDAQ: VNR  ) , which also uses swaps to almost exclusively hedge natural gas while using three-way collars to hedge about a third of its oil production. While LINN could get more creative, one thing I'd be surprised to hear is that it's going to join these two peers and leave some of its production unhedged.

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

BreitBurn Energy Partners (NASDAQ: BBEP  )
The oil and gas producer is structured like an MLP that most income investors have become well acquainted with these days. The only difference here is that BreitBurn produces oil and gas instead of transporting or storing it. That businessmodeland structure has enabled the company to pay a very generous 10% distribution. Further, it strives to deliver best-in-class distribution growth which it recently delivered when it boosted the distribution by 4%.

The Company holds interest in the Bear Lodge Property through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Rare Element Resources, Inc. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Travis Hoium]

Not the time to bet on rare-earth materials
There's no question that the rare-earth mineral space has peaked, and that it has a lot of questions to surmount. Despite Wall Street's euphoria over the stock, I'd be cautious about Molycorp and would definitely stay away from speculative rare-earth plays Rare Element Resources (NYSEMKT: REE  ) and Avalon Rare Metals (NYSEMKT: AVL  ) , who don't even have the revenue Molycorp is generating.
