Top US Companies To Invest In 2014

General Dynamics (NYSE: GD  ) won a $67.4 million Pentagon contract Thursday, the Pentagon has just confirmed. Curiously, though, the General Dynamics division that won the award may soon not exist -- at least not independently.

Last week, as you may recall, General Dynamics announced plans to merge its Armament and Technical Products business into its Ordnance and Tactical Systems unit. Regardless, the Pentagon announced Thursday that it is exercising an option attached to an existing contract with the soon-to-disappear General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products unit.

Pursuant to this option, General Dynamics will supply an unspecified number of hydra rockets, warheads, and related parts to the U.S. Army, Navy, and Air Force, and also to the government of Saudi Arabia. The Pentagon's contract announcement noted that the cumulative total face value of this contract has now risen past $1 billion, thanks to this award.

Generally fired from rocket launchers aboard combat aircraft and helicopters, the hydra rocket is a low-cost, 70mm munition comprising a MK66 MOD 4 rocket motor, one of nine possible warheads, and one or more fuzes to set them off. The high degree of modifiability of the rocket makes the hydra "a tailor-made solution to the warfighter's situation requirements," says General Dynamics.

Of course, Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S  ) still owns the bulk of Clearwire. The proposed $20.1 billion deal with Japan's Softbank for a 70% stake is still on the table. DISH Network (NASDAQ: DISH  ) made an unsolicited $25.5 billion offer for Sprint just today, while DISH has been slowing building up its own spectrum holdings in preparation for entering the wireless sector. DISH outlined numerous ways that it believes its offer is superior to Softbank's.

The impetus for Globalstar's more than 500% run since its 52-week lows relates to a the Federal Communications Commission's recent decision toconsider allowing the company to offer its mobile services over existing satellite networks. The move wouldn't be unprecedented, asDISH Network (NASDAQ: DISH  ) last year won the right to offer mobile services over satellite networks that had previously been utilized just for satellite services. The thought process here is that the added spectrum for Globalstar, if approved, could cause another telecom service provider to purchase the company.

Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S  ) , DISH Network (NASDAQ: DISH  ) , and Verizon (NYSE: VZ  ) have each been making a play for Clearwire (NASDAQ: CLWR  ) -- if not for the whole company, at least for some of its spectrum. This is a far cry from 2011 when it could barely get the time of day from its network partner and majority owner Sprint.

Lexmark International (NYSE: LXK) shares tumbled 11.19 percent to $41.53 after the company reported Q1 adjusted earnings of $0.92 per share on revenue of $877.70 million.

  • [By Evan Niu, CFA]

What: Shares of Lexmark (NYSE: LXK  ) have popped today by greater than 17% following the company's first-quarter earnings release.

So what: Revenue in the quarter came in at the high end of guidance at $884 million, topping the consensus estimate of $873.6 million. The same is true for Lexmark's non-GAAP earnings per share of $0.88, which was more than the $0.87 per share adjusted profit that investors were expecting. CEO Paul Rooke said Lexmark continues to transition from a hardware-centric model to a solutions-centric approach, which is underscored by the recent acquisitions of two software companies and the sale of the inkjet business.

  • [By Lee Jackson]

Lexmark International Inc. (NYSE: LXK) is another name that has slowly, but surely, lost its cache as an industry leader. Once one of the premiere names in high-end printers, the company continues to lose market share. It also has very little to offer in terms of innovation and new and exciting products. The stock does pay shareholders a solid 2.9% dividend. The Merrill Lynch price target is $31, and the consensus price target is $31.75. That is far below Friday’s closing price of $41.12.

This GICS sector is made up of companies whose businesses are dominated by activities, such as the construction or provision of oil rigs, drilling equipment, and other energy-related service and equipment (such as seismic data collection), or companies engaged in the exploration, production, marketing, refining and/or transportation of oil and gas products. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By MONEYMORNING.COM]

I like the idea of investing in a group of the largest integrated energy companies, oil and gas explorers/producers, and energy equipment and services. It's like a call option on energy with no expiry date. One of the best alternatives in this sector is the Vanguard Energy ETF (NYSE: VDE).
