Two of the oldest brands in U.S. retailing are engaged in a struggle for survival. And if either is to defy a Darwinian end, some evolution will have to take place.

Today results from Sears will not get the same reception. It is not that the store results are that much worse. The problem is Sears has nothing left to sell off. Sales at its Kmart stores are dropping faster than sales at its Sears stores, and the company already hasspun off its Hometown and outlet stores and half its Canadian stores.

When judging a company's prospects, how quickly it turns cash outflows into cash inflows can be just as important as how much profit it's booking in the accounting fantasy world we call "earnings." This is one of the first metrics I check when I'm hunting for the market's best stocks. Today, we'll see how it applies to Great Lakes Dredge & Dock (Nasdaq: GLDD ) .

Shares of HCP (HCP) are dropping again today following the surprise ouster of CEO James Flaherty yesterday.
The healthcare REIT is busy trying to convince investors that there’s nothing behind the move other than the fact that they wanted a new leadership style when the place Jones Lang LaSalle’s(JLL) Lauralee Martin at the helm. Cowen’s James Sullivan explains why the move continues to shake up investors:
The CEO announcement took investors by surprise, and we may see additional share volatility as shareholders digest the transition. The apparent suddenness of the announcement, and the age difference between Flaherty and Martin, may also raise questions about Martin’s tenure and the new succession plans.
Management Reiterated Its Commitment To The Current Strategy. Still, it is natural to assume that with a new leader, some changes to the management team may be made (even if in the form of additions to the team). And given Martin’s experience and comments on the call, we could see an increased emphasis on international opportunities, which may raise concerns with existing shareholders.
HCP has dropped 1.6% to $39.17 today, while competitor Health Care REIT (HCN) has gained 0.6% to $61.97, while Ventas (VTR) has risen 0.5% to $62.31.

CW Dividend Yield: 0.82% - [By Alex Planes]
In 1917, the two major aircraft manufacturers were forced into a patent pool that would offer modest licensing terms for prospective upstarts. By this point, the Wrights were out of the industry. Wilbur had died years earlier, and Orville had sold his stake to outside investors, leaving Curtiss with an easier path to the dominance previously denied him. The Wrights' reputation was badly damaged, and competition came to the industry despite their efforts. Years later, on the eve of the Great Depression, Curtiss gained a final measure of victory when his company and the Wrights' namesake business merged to become Curtiss-Wright (NYSE: CW ) , which was at the time the largest aviation company in the United States. This company was also briefly a part of the Dow (from 1928 to 1930), making it the first aviation component in the index's history.

With about $5 billion in takeovers to complete and his company stock down more than 30 percent, Nicholas Schorsch had his hands full. That didn stop the chief executive officer of American Realty Capital Properties Inc. (ARCP) from making his biggest real estate bet.

Next on the list of monthly dividend stocks is one of Realty Income upstart competitors, American Capital Realty Properties (ARCP).
I call ARCP an “upstart” due to its short trading history (it only been trading since 2011). But the truth is, after its merger with Cole Properties (COLE), ARCP will be the largest triple-net REIT by market cap, and its total square footage will be nearly double that of Realty Income. And while ARCP stock has a short history, its executive team has an average of 20 years experience in the industry.
- [By Dividend Growth Investor]
American Realty Capital Properties, Inc. (ARCP) owns and acquires single tenant, freestanding commercial real estate that is net leased on a medium-term basis, primarily to investment grade credit rated and other creditworthy tenants. I like the fact that management is aggressively purchasing assets, acquiring companies and working towards increasing Funds from Operations for shareholder distributions. I can easily view this REIT becoming the next Realty Income in a few years. The risk of course is that they overpay for acquisitions, and this ends up costing existing shareholders big time. The REIT has raised dividends since going public in 2011. This REIT currently yields 6.20%.

The Seaway pipeline, the joint venture betweenEnterprise Products Partners (NYSE: EPD ) and Enbridge (NYSE: ENB ) , has taken on a life of its own, as speculators are trying to gain access to the last bit of capacity to sell the space on a secondary market. In this video, Fool.com contributor Aimee Duffy explains what is going on and why this pipeline matters so much to oil producers and investors alike.

Energy has also held the Canadian economy back, with challenges hampering the potential growth in the industry. Enbridge (NYSE: ENB ) and TransCanada, for instance, both have huge opportunities to capitalize on prospective new pipelines, yet environmental concerns haven't allowed the companies to work as quickly as they might otherwise to build out energy-transportation infrastructure for hard-to-reach production areas.
- [By Tyler Crowe]
Today, many newly discovered unconventional sources are very light, sweet, and easy to refine. Since our Gulf Coast refineries are still geared toward heavy, sour crudes, we will continue to import that grade to use in these facilities. In fact, one type of crude oil that is strikingly similar toVenezuelanand Mexican crudes is Canadian oil sands. Canadian oil sands are indesperateneed of refineries capable of treating this heavy mix, and Gulf of Mexico refineries are just the type of refinery these crudes need. This is the driving force for Canadian pipeline companies TransCanada (NYSE: TRP ) and Enbridge (NYSE: ENB ) expanding their takeaway capacity to the Gulf through the Keystone XL and the Trunkline conversion, respectively.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Matt DiLallo]
More than anything I wanted to learn how to use options prudently, and I discovered that writing options to buy stocks cheaper or sell them dearer led to much more frequent profits. Today you'll often find me writing puts on stocks like Heckmann (NYSE: NES ) or Seadrill (NYSE: SDRL ) in order to buy shares cheaper. I want to own a piece of Heckmann's business because I can get behind its model, which is dedicated to solving the environmental issues surrounding fracking. Meanwhile, Seadrill is perfectly positioned to benefit from the amazing growth of deepwater drilling.
- [By Eric Volkman]
Results for Seadrill's (NYSE: SDRL ) first quarter show operating revenue totaled $1.27 billion, up from $1.05 billion in the same period the previous year. Attributable net profit over that time frame dipped slightly, coming in at $409 million ($0.85 per diluted share) from Q1 2012's $416 million ($0.87).
