There are a couple of reasons money managers often advise Canadian investors to overcome their home-country bias and to put part of their assets abroad. One goal is to get a chance at higher returns by investing in expanding businesses or industries that are absent from our own stock exchanges. Canada's stock market represents only about 3.4% of the world's $62-trillion (US) in publicly traded companies. A second goal is to diversify wealth and reduce the vulnerability of one's portfolio to a collapse in the Canadian market.

Percentages aside, the benefit of the relative health of these housing markets can be seen in the performance of smaller, regional banks like Bank of Hawaii (NYSE: BOH  ) , BB&T (NYSE: BBT  ) , and TD Bank (NYSE: TD  ) which have large presences in Hawaii, West Virginia, and Maine, respectively. Shares of all of these banks have more than recovered since the financial crisis as a testament to this.

Top 5 Gold Stocks To Invest In Right Now

Although we don't believe in timing the market or panicking over daily movements, we do like to keep an eye on market changes -- just in case they're material to our investing thesis.

For a second straight day, stocks jumped on bullish data from China, as industrial and retail numbers from the Eastern economic powerhouse both beat expectations. On top of that, the international community seems to be working together to prevent a U.S. military strike on Syria. Russia devised a proposal, set to be put before the U.N., to confiscate chemical weapons from the war-ravaged country. The S&P 500 Index (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC  ) added 12 points, or 0.7%, ending at 1,683. Despite the broad market gains, three S&P components stood out as notable decliners Tuesday.

Whenever the world looks like it's not about to crash and burn, the price of gold seems to face headwinds. The precious metal, seen as a safe-haven in uncertain times, often gains in the face of disaster, and with the drums of war ebbing today, so did gold. That means tougher times for gold miners like Newmont Mining (NYSE: NEM  ) , which lost 3.9% Tuesday as gold fell 1.6% to $1,364 an ounce.

The Gap’s Gap: Share’s Fall 3% on Disappointing Sales, Susquehanna Downgrade

The Gap (GPS) reported disappointing sales yesterday–disappointing enough that investors ignored its profit projections to force the stock lower today.

Bloomberg

The Wall Street Journal has the details:

[For] the four weeks ended Aug. 3, same-store sales rose 1%, falling short of the 1.6% consensus view. Gap stores posted a 7% rise when 1.7% growth was expected, while Banana Republic’s same-store sales declined 1%, compared to expectations for a 1.6% decline. Old Navy recorded a 5% decline in same-store sales, missing expectations for 2.4% growth…

Best Shipping Stocks To Invest In Right Now

For the quarter ended Aug. 3, the retailer said it expects per-share earnings of 62 cents to 64 cents, topping the 59 cents estimated by analysts polled by Thomson Reuters. Net sales for the quarter rose 8% to $3.87 billion, also topping analysts’ projections of $3.8 billion.

As a result of the announcement, the Gap’s shares have dropped 3.4% to $43.96, after opening down 1.8%, far cry from the big gain following its June report.

Many analysts were far more positive than the market, however. Janney Capital Market’s Adrienne Tennant and Gabriella Carbone, for instance, blame the sputtering sales on difficult comparisons. They write:

…we continue to remain encouraged by solid traffic trends seen across all divisions and expect sustainable positive comps going forward. A key initiative for 2013 is to drive increased revenues through new brands, channels, and geographies, such as Athleta, Gap China, Old Navy Japan, franchises, and global outlets. GPS also has planned to start franchising Old Navy in 2014 in key international markets and are exploring the opportunities to add company-operated Old Navy and Banana Republic stores in China. We believe the new global brand management structure of the business will continue to build upon overall brand strength, help attain greater speed and efficiencies, as well as fuel future long term growth. Overall, we continue to believe the company will benefit from ongoing momentum at all three divisions.

Lazard’s Jennifer Davis, meanwhile, believes the Gap will be able to “maintain sales momentum though 2H despite more difficult compares.” She raised her price target to $52 from $50.

Even a downgrade from Susquehanna’s Thomas Filandro–he cut the stock to Neutral from Positive–was done executed because the stock had gotten too expensive. Filandro writes:

Another well executed quarter for GPS. Although we are once again raising our EPS projections and increasing our price target, we are downgrading to Neutral from Positive based entirely on valuation. Since November 2011, GPS shares have appreciated 137%. We applaud management’s execution of the business, distribution of excess cash to shareholders and focus on building an omni-channel global presence. We are raising our 12- month price objective to $49.

Sterne Agee’s Ike Boruchow and Tom Nikic, however, worry that margins might have peaked. They write:

By coupling its discovery and development expertise, including its knowledge of the TGF-b superfamily, with its internal protein engineering and manufacturing capabilities, it has built a productive research and development platform that has generated clinical and preclinical protein therapeutic candidates with mechanisms of action.

The Company focuses on discovering and developing protein therapeutics that target a group of approximately 30 secreted proteins, or ligands, that are collectively referred to as the TGF-b superfamily. These ligands bind to subsets of 12 different receptors on the surface of cells, triggering intra-cellular changes in gene expression that guide cell growth and differentiation. The TGF-b superfamily ligands and their receptors represent an under-explored and diverse set of drug targets with the potential to yield therapeutics that modulate the growth and repair of diseased cells and tissues.

The Company has three internally discovered protein therapeutic candidates that are being studied in 12 ongoing Phase 2 clinical trials, focused on cancer and rare diseases. The Companys two advanced protein therapeutic candidates, sotatercept and ACE-536, promote red blood cell production through a novel mechanism. Together with its collaboration partner, Celgene Corporation, the Company is developing sotatercept and ACE-536 to treat anemia and associated complications in patients with b-thalassemia and myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). ! These red blo od cell disorders are generally unresponsive to approved drugs. The Companys third clinical stage protein therapeutic candidate, dalantercept, is designed to inhibit blood vessel formation through a mechanism that is distinct from, and potentially synergistic with, the dominant class of cancer drugs that inhibit blood vessel formation, the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) pathway inhibitors. The Company is developing dalantercept primarily for use in combination with these products to produce better outcomes for cancer patients.

The Company and Celgene have conducted six human clinical trials with sotatercept in over 160 healthy volunteers and cancer patients. The Company has conducted one clinical trial with ACE-536 in healthy volunteers. In these studies, both sotatercept and ACE-536 caused a dose-dependent increase in the number of red blood cells. Based on these results, the Company and Celgene have initiated Phase II clinical trials with each of these protein therapeutic candidates in b-thalassemia and MDS. In the ongoing trial of sotatercept in patients with b-thalassemia, the Company has observed encouraging, dose-dependent increases in hemoglobin in a subset of patients at the two lowest dose levels.

Sotatercept is a soluble receptor fusion protein consisting of the extracellular domain of the activin receptor type IIA (ActRIIA) linked to the Fc domain of human IgG1. Sotatercept acts as a protein trap for TGF-b superfamily ligands that signal through the ActRIIA receptor. Sotatercept has increased red blood cells in multiple clinical trials. ACE-536 is a soluble receptor fusion protein consisting of a modified extracellular domain of the activin receptor type IIB (ActRIIB) linked to the Fc domain of human IgG1.

Here's Why Universal Display Plunged Today

Universal Display (NASDAQ: OLED  ) shareholders were left shaking their heads Monday after the stock plummeted as much as 12% during intraday trading. Shares recovered to a 4.3% loss by the end of the day.

The company didn't report earnings early; it's still all set to announce second-quarter results next Thursday, August 8. In fact, there were no new press releases on the OLED technologist's website this morning, and the silence on Universal Display's news feeds seemed absolutely deafening as the selling continued to accelerate.

So what happened?
In a word: Samsung.

Specifically, investors panicked after a Bloomberg report surfaced saying the Korean electronics giant was close to announcing a deal to acquire German OLED specialist Novaled AG.

In addition, Samsung also released its audited second-quarter earnings results this weekend, which showed the company's growth is slowing largely thanks to disappointing sales of its flagship Galaxy S4 smartphone.

Of course, the Galaxy S4's massive 5-inch, full-HD AMOLED screen is powered by Universal Display's technology, and it's no mystery Samsung has long stood alone as Universal Display's single largest customer. In fact, according to Universal's most recent annual report, Samsung Display accounted for a whopping 68% of the company's total revenue in last year.

And considering Samsung's mobile devices currently represent the only technology segment to utilize OLED in any significant capacity to date, you can't blame Mr. Market for being skittish with regard to Universal Display's prospects going forward.

Here's the problem with that thinking
However, I think there are several reasons this train of thought is shortsighted, at best.

First, we need to remember Universal Display and Novaled have long worked in a jointly cooperative fashion with one another for nearly a decade to improve the efficiency of OLED materials, and in the process have continuously supplied complementary -- not competitive -- materials to larger electronics manufacturers like Samsung.

In fact, analysts from both Wedbush and Oppenheimer quickly chimed in this afternoon to say as much, helping the stock recover the majority of its losses to close down just above 4% for the day.

Curiously enough, for those of you keeping track, today's sell-off was also disturbingly similar to the 13% plunge Universal Display endured in February after another analyst voiced concerns that fellow OLED supplier Nippon Steel was also supplying green OLED materials to Samsung. Once again, however, and as I pointed out at the time, Nippon Steel was just another one of UDC's longtime partners and represents little threat to its leadership in the OLED market.

10 Best Financial Stocks To Own Right Now

Second, with regard to Samsung's earnings report, it's also important to remember OLED is still in the very early stages of development and Samsung isn't the only game in town.

LG Display (NYSE: LPL  ) , for example, announced back in April that it will dedicate more than 50% of its 2014 capital expenditures not only to improving its utilization of OLED technology in exciting new products -- including flexible and transparent displays -- but also to building out its infrastructure to support mass production of the OLED displays.

In addition, Samsung itself stated in its earnings release that one of its bright spots was "improved earnings led by OLED panel shipment growth for premium smartphones," so you can bet the company won't be abandoning the technology anytime soon. In fact, Samsung's release went on to state the company "expect[s] [OLED] smartphone panel demand growth to continue" as it expands "line-ups featuring various sizes and high resolution."

What's more, while mobile devices have largely been responsible for filling Universal Display's coffers so far, other technologies including large-screen OLED televisions from Samsung, LG, Sony, and Panasonic are finally beginning to make headway in consumer markets, so that should meaningfully contribute to revenue as economies of scale enable lower prices. In addition, over the next few years, Universal Display investors can also look forward to growth from increased adoption of new OLED lighting solutions, encapsulation tech, and any other incredible new OLED gadgets that might show up along the way.

As a result, I remain convinced Samsung's current weakness -- which could just as easily prove temporary, anyway -- has no significant long-term negative effects on Universal Display's business.

So don't panic, Universal Display shareholders: Your company is doing just fine.

It's incredible to think just how much of our digital and technological lives are almost entirely shaped by just a handful of companies like Samsung. Top 5 Stocks To Buy Right Now: Cadus Corp (KDUS)

Cadus Corporation (Cadus), incorporated in January 23, 1992, has a wholly owned subsidiary, Cadus Technologies, Inc. (the Subsidiary), which holds all patents, patent applications, know how, licenses and drug discovery technologies of the Company. The Company maintains all its strains, as well as a biological database that catalogues its collection of cells, cell lines, yeast strains and genetic engineering tools. This database has approximately 30,000 entries, which include the phenotype and the genotype of the cell or yeast strain and its storage site. As of December 31, 2011, the Company had no internal or external drug discovery operations.

Yeast

The Company has developed technologies based on yeast that are useful in identifying drug discovery candidates targeted at G Protein-coupled receptors. Yeast is a single-celled microorganism that is used to make bread, beer and wine. Both yeast and human cells consist of a membrane, an intracellular r egion and a nucleus containing genes. The genes in yeast express proteins, including cell-surface receptors, such as G Protein-coupled receptors and signaling molecules, such as protein kinases, that are similar to human proteins.

Hybrid Yeast Cells

The Company developed a technology to insert human genes into yeast cells to create hybrid yeast cells. Its scientists created hybrid yeast cells by replacing yeast G Protein-coupled receptor genes and certain signaling molecules with their human equivalents. As a result, these hybrid yeast cells express a human G Protein-coupled receptor and a portion of its signaling pathway. These hybrid yeast cells can be used to identify those compounds that act as agonists or antagonists to that receptor or a molecule that is in its signaling pathway. The Company designed and developed more than 25 thousand genetically different yeast st! rains that can be used to build hybrid yeast cells (the Yeast System).

The Company competes with Glaxo Smith Kline, Plc.

Best Industrial Disributor Stocks For 2015

History never repeats but often rhymes. So when it comes to the demise of bull markets, we can, to borrow the immortal line of Captain Renault in Casablanca, round up the usual suspects. Often, the factors below are found at the scene of the crime (the start of a bear market). None appears to be an imminent threat yet, but it pays to be on the lookout for these bear-market bellwethers.

1. Higher inflation

Spiraling prices reduce consumer buying power, which accounts for some 70% of U.S. economic activity. Inflation also whittles the value of financial assets. Think back to the mid 1970s, when oil (and wheat) price shocks bumped consumer prices to double digits in 1974. Inflation vacuumed money out of financial assets and into gold, real estate and other hard assets, and Standard & Poor 500-stock index lost 48% of its value between January 1973 and October 1974. (All figures for bear-market declines exclude dividends.)

Best Industrial Disributor Stocks For 2015: Aethlon Medical Inc (AEMD)

Aethlon Medical, Inc. (Aethlon), incorporated on April 17, 1991, is a developmental-stage company. The Company is focused on creating medical devices that address unmet medical needs in cancer, infectious disease, and other life-threatening conditions.

The Company's Aethlon ADAPT (Adaptive Dialysis-Like Affinity Platform Technology) system is a revenue-stage technology platform that provides the basis for a new class of devices that provide rapid, selective removal of disease promoting particles from the entire circulatory system. The Aethlon ADAPT product pipeline includes the Aethlon Hemopurifier to address infectious disease and cancer, and a medical device being developed under the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to reduce the incidence of sepsis in combat-injured soldiers.

The Aethlon Hemopurifier

The Company's Hemopurifier is a medical device that targets the rapid elimination of life-threatening infectious disease and cancer glycopathogens from circulation. Under the feasibility study protocol, the Company will enroll ten end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients who are infected with the Hepatitis C virus (HCV) to demonstrate the safety of Hemopurifier therapy. In addition to augmenting the early viral kinetic response to SOC, the Company's Hemopurifier provides a candidate solution for viral rebound patients who traditionally are forced to discontinue therapy at the point HCV establishes resistance to drug regimens. Additionally, the Company's Hemopurifier represents a therapeutic strategy to address the population of HCV-infected dialysis patients for which SOC and all-antiviral strategies may be contraindicated or not cleared.

In design, the Company's Hemopurifier consists of the affinity lectin Galanthus nivalis agglutinin (GNA) immobilized in the outer-capillary space of advanced plasma membrane technology. The design allows for extracorporeal therapeutic delivery to occur on standard CRRT and dialysis instruments alre! ady located in hospitals and clinics worldwide. The mechanism of the Hemopurifier to rapidly eliminate a broad-spectrum disease targets is based on GNA ability to selectively bind high mannose signatures that are abundant on the surface of cancer-secreted exosomes and glycoproteins that reside on the outer membrane of infectious viral pathogens. The Company has also established a compassionate-use treatment program at the Medanta Medicity Institute in India that provides treatment access to HCV-infected individuals.

The Company's Hemopurifier has also been discovered to capture tumor-secreted exosomes underlying several forms of cancer. Tumor-derived exosomes have recently emerged to be a vital therapeutic target in cancer care. These microvesicular particles suppress the immune response in cancer patients through apoptosis of immune cells and their quantity in circulation correlates directly with disease progression. In addition to treating HCV-infected individuals, the Company has conducted a single proof of principal treatment study related to the treatment of HIV. In the study, Hemopurifier therapy reduced viral load by 93% in an HIV-AIDS infected individual without the administration of antiviral drug therapy. The study protocol provided for 12 Hemopurifier treatments, each four hours in duration, that were administered over the course of one month. Researchers at a university have since discovered that the Hemopurifier is able to capture exosomes that transport NEF protein, which is known to suppress the immune response in HIV-infected individuals.

The Company has been assigned all rights and title to and interests in an invention and related worldwide patent rights for a method to treat cancer under an assignment agreement with the London Health Science Center Research, Inc. (LHSCRI) The agreement provides that the Company is responsible for paying certain patent application and filing costs as well as a 2% royalty on any future net sales. The Company has als! o exercis! ed an option to license a pending patent entitled, Method to Inhibit Proliferation and Growth of Metastases from The Trustees of Boston University. The license provides a development strategy for new cancer therapies by uniting drug agents that inhibit the spread of cancer-related metastases with filtration techniques already in the Aethlon Hemopurifier(R). The resulting devices would inhibit tumor growth by reducing the presence of circulating growth factors without interfering with surgical wound healing or the recovery of tissue injured by radiation therapy.

The Company competes with Asahi Kasei Kurary Medical.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another stock that's starting to move within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Atlatsa Resources (ATL), which engages in the mining, exploration and development of platinum group metals properties located in the Bushveld Igneous Complex in South Africa. This stock has been on fire so far in 2013, with shares up a whopping 198%.

If you take a look at the chart for Atlatsa Resources, you'll notice that this stock has been uptrending strong for the last two months and change, with shares soaring higher from its low of 28 cents per share to its intraday high of 46 cents per share. During that uptrend, shares of ATL have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. Shares of ATL have now started to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at 43 cents to 44 cents per share. That move is quickly pushing shares of ATL within range of triggering another big breakout trade.

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in ATL if it manages to break out above its 52-week high at 50 cents per share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 170,178 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then ATL will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are its next major overhead resistance levels at 63 cents to 73 cents per share, or even 80 cents per share.

Traders can look to buy ATL off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day moving average of 39 cents per share, or near more support at 37 cents per share. One can also buy ATL off strength once it clears its 52-week high at 50 cents with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

For instance, European energy stocks BP (NYSE: BP  ) and Total (NYSE: TOT  ) haven't done as well as their U.S. counterparts, even though they both have similar global exposure to energy assets around the world. When you think about investing, don't ignore the Global Dow, despite the Dow Industrials' stronger performance recently.

Today I am looking atBP (LSE: BP  ) (NYSE: BP  ) to see how it measures up.

What are BP's earnings expected to do?

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

Contango can also affect a company like LINN Energy (NASDAQ: LINE  ) which seeks to hedge all of its production for the long term. A good example of this can be seen last year when LINN Energybought the Jonah Field from BP (NYSE: BP  ) . Upon closing the deal, LINN hedged 100% of the expected oil and natural gas production through 2017. If the market were in contango at the time it could have had an impact on the future profits LINN expects to produce from that asset. It would mean that production sold just after closing would have netted a higher sale price than oil and gas that won't be produced until 2017. That's one reason why LINN had been using puts to hedge its production; it wanted to keep some of that upside.

Thus, a failure to protect these employees arguably puts Exxon at a competitive disadvantage against companies like Chevron (NYSE: CVX  ) , Shell Oil (NYSE: RDS-A  ) , and BP (NYSE: BP  ) which, according to the Human Rights Campaign, all offer better protections and benefits for LGBT employees.

Why Approach Resources Inc.'s Shares Dropped

Although we don't believe in timing the market or panicking over market movements, we do like to keep an eye on big changes -- just in case they're material to our investing thesis.

What: Shares of Approach Resources (NASDAQ: AREX  ) dropped 10% today after the company released earnings.

So what: Sales rose 33.8% from a year ago, to $44.2 million, and the company swung to a profit of $495,000, or $0.01 per share. After adjusting for one-time items, the company made a profit of $0.07 per share, in line with estimates.

Management did lower 2013 production estimates from 3.6 MMBoe, to 3.4 MMBoe, due to downtime at a third-party NGL fractionation facility. This is where the real disappointment came today.

Now what: Management still expects to grow production 40% next year by drilling 70 more horizontal wells. I'm also encouraged by a 20% decline in the cost of each well. This wasn't a great quarter, but the plant shutdown is a one-time event, so I don't think it's a reason to panic. Investors are getting a nice discount today, and if operational improvement continues, next year, the stock has room to run higher.

Aside from the Zillow Inc earnings report, it should be said that Move Inc reported Q2 2014 earnings on July 29th (revenue rose 7% to $61.3M, average monthly unique users of realtor.com®'s web and mobile sites grew 18% to 31.2M and Non-GAAP Loss Per Share was $0.03 per diluted share verses Non-GAAP Earnings Per Share of $0.11) and Trulia Inc reported Q3 2014 earnings on October 29th (total revenue rose 67% to $67.1M along with an adjusted net loss of $2.8 million, or $0.08 per share on a basic and diluted basis, compared with adjusted net income of $9.1 million, or $0.26 and $0.24 per share on a basic and diluted basis, respectively). The acquis ition of Move Inc and Trulia Inc though (assuming the Federal Trade Commission approves the deal) really leaves Zillow Inc as the main publicly traded online real estate information.

8 Things Apple Investors Could Have Bought With What They've Lost

After peaking at $705 last September, Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) shares broke below $400 this past week for the first time since December 2011. That $305 per share loss translates into $286 billion in market cap lost in a matter of months. That's an astounding amount to have evaporated in such a short period of time, mostly resulting from growth deceleration, high-end market saturation, and -- most of all -- fear.

The value that Apple investors have lost in aggregate since September could buy an awful lot of things. What could shareholders have purchased or paid for with $286 billion?

1 Microsoft and 3 Netflixes
With longtime rival Microsoft's (NASDAQ: MSFT  ) entire valuation currently under $250 billion, Apple investors could have theoretically swallowed the software giant whole with as much as they've lost. With the change left over ("can you break a 286 billion dollar bill?"), the Mac maker could have also scooped up Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX  ) three times over just for good measure. Buying the dominant online video streamer has been entertained before.

Almost 2 International Space Stations
With development beginning in 1994, the International Space Station has cost an estimated total of $150 billion over the past 19 years to build, operate, and maintain. Only approximately $100 billion has been borne by the U.S., with other countries pitching in to help foot the bill. For $286 billion, Apple investors could have nearly financed two orbital research facilities.

14 million discouraged European workers
One of the European Union's research agencies, Eurofound, conducted a study late last year that estimated the cost of Europe's "lost generation," 14 million out-of-work and discouraged young Europeans. Aged 15 to 29, these individuals are not employed and not pursuing education and training, in part because of difficult macroeconomic conditions across the pond. The report estimates that this group altogether is costing the EU approximately 3 billion euros per week in state welfare and lost production, which translates into 153 billion euros annually. That translates into $200 billion of annual costs, well under our imaginary budget.

4 Hurricane Sandys
Easily the worst climate disaster to hit the Northeast last year was Hurricane Sandy. Economic losses, damages, and other costs related to the superstorm have been estimated at $65 billion. Apple shareholders could have covered those damages more than four times and still had money left over.

Nearly 3 iPad Minis for every person in America
With the entry-level iPad Mini starting at $329, Apple could have handed out 869 million of the devices with its market-cap losses. That would be enough for nearly three small tablets for each of the 315 million people in the U.S. today.

1 Japanese tsunami
The horrific tsunami that struck Japan in 2011 resulted in approximately $210 billion in damages. That figure covered only the first nine months of 2011 and has inevitably climbed since those estimates. With the $76 billion Apple shareholders have left over, they should be able to cover the rest, too.

8 NFLs
Forbes recently came out with its 2012 valuations of all 32 teams in the NFL. Adding up every single team's franchise value sums up to $35.4 billion, meaning Apple's lost value could cover eight entire NFLs. However, in this case, Apple could be getting something in return, since all teams combined generated an estimated $8.8 billion in revenue last year. With eight NFLs, that would be $70.4 billion in annual revenue, which still wouldn't match the iPhone business alone, which has generated $85.4 billion in sales over the past year.

371 Mona Lisas
The Mona Lisa is, of course, priceless, but that hasn't stopped people from trying to figure out its worth. The main way people have attempted to value the historic painting is through a 1962 insurance assessment, which pegged its value at $100 million at the time. Adjusting for inflation using the CPI translates that total into $770 million, making the Mona Lisa probably the most valuable painting in the world. Even so, Apple shareholders could theoretically purchase 371 of Leonardo Da Vinci's timeless masterpiece.

There's more where that came from
Of course, the list of things that $286 billion could pay for is well beyond the scope of this article. If Apple falls further, its market cap losses from the peak could easily approach or top $300 billion. What would you buy with what Apple shareholders have lost?

Can Apple ever recover all or some of its market-cap losses? That's a key question on the minds of every Apple shareholder right now, and The Motley Fool hopes to answer it in our new premium research service on Apple. Senior technology analyst Eric Bleeker, CFA, and I have produced numerous extensive reports on a wide range of topics, all of which dig into Apple's core fundamentals. Get started by clicking here.

10 Best Clean Energy Stocks To Own Right Now

Last week, the Cleantech Group andHeslin Rothenberg Farley & Mesiti P.C. co-released their 2013 Clean Energy Patent Growth Index, which tracks clean energy patents issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The index is meant todepict a trajectory of innovative activity in the clean energy sector.Among its highlights:

Solar, with 965 patents, was the No. 1 technology, overtaking fuel cells. And each year, the technology commands a greater share of patent activity:

Image credit: Clean Energy Patent Growth Index.

The United States was, by far, the No. 1 awarded country, with 556 of those 965 patents (56%). The United States' proportion of solar patents (56%) outsized its proportion of non-solar clean energy patents (45% ex-solar). Japan, projected to be 2014's No. 2 solar market, came in second with 107 patents (17%) awarded. China, 2014's No. 1 projected solar market, amassed just 18 patents in 5th place. Germany, to which the solar industry owes much for its rate of advancement, placed 4th.

Potential home-court advantage aside, the numbers indicate the U.S. is and will continue to be the hub for solar innovation, which is why SunPower (NASDAQ: SPWR  ) and First Solar (NASDAQ: FSLR  ) warrant consideration for any solar investor. SunPower, which touts the highest-efficiency commercially available panels has long demonstrated its R&D prowess. In 2013, SunPower took home second solar prize with 28 patents awarded (compared to 10 for First Solar).
