If Manitok drills, completes and equips 3 horizontal Cardium oil wells at 100% of the cost, it will earn the entire 70% of working interest in Legacy's Farm-in Lands.

Best High Dividend Companies To Own In Right Now

The number of companies paying dividends in the S&P 500 is at a 15-year high. According to FactSet, just over 80 companies in the index do not pay dividends. Paying dividends has become more attractive for companies of all sizes.

However, not all dividends are created equal. Of the 500 companies in the index, 99 pay their shareholders a dividend of 3% or more. By comparison, a 10-year Treasury note yields 2.66%. While Treasury securities come with an implied guarantee of a return of principal, share price appreciation of these companies also is expected to provide additional positive returns. Dividends are intended to make those returns even better over time.

BASEBALL: The priciest and cheapest playoff tickets

Dividends are considered among the most straightforward measures of capital returns. After all, they represent cash going back into the hands of investors directly from the company. However, a high dividend yield does not give a complete picture of the value of an investment. The health of the company also has to be considered. Investors need to be able to differentiate a high dividend from a safe dividend.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Tim Melvin]

I always find it very interesting to see what long-term investors are selling in a given quarter. Kahn Brothers lightened up on many financials that have shot up and now trade above book value. The firm sold out of Flushing Financial (FFIC), TCF Financial (TCB) and Dime Community Bank (DCOM). Khan apparently shares my views on the large-cap drug stocks, easing up on both Pfizer (PFE) and Bristol Meyers (BMY) over the summer. Khan Brothers also sold the last of the Travelers shares (TRV) it has owned since 2008 at more than twice the purchase price.

  • [By Zacks]

Shares of TCF Financial Corporation (NYSE: TCB) have recorded a year-to-date return of 26.6%. Impressive organic growth, balance sheet repositioning and strong capital deployment activities of the company were primary factors behind the growth. However, we are not so optimistic about these positives translating into further price appreciation down the road as there will likely be significant pressure on its top line.

Facebook Enters Its First Post-IPO Test

5 Best Electric Utility Stocks To Own For 2015

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Facebook (FB) reported during its first-quarter call this week that it has surpassed 1 billion mobile users.

While this rare feat stirred up much excitement, it also underscored that Facebook has in some ways maxed out its market penetration potential, sending it on its way to exhausting its mainstay ad-growth avenues.

Recognizing this, outgoing CFO David Ebersman cautioned to analysts during the call that as comps become more difficult, Facebook continues to expect its year-over-year ad revenue growth rates will decline from the first-quarter rate and be meaningfully lower by the end of 2014.

Gartner research director Brian Blau says that Facebook user fatigue has definitely already kicked, though it's happening in cycles. In the U.S., where many of the users were among the first adopters of Facebook, usage is really slowing down. The next wave of users are in many of the emerging markets, where fascination with the social media platform has just starting to kick in and usage still has a lot of room to grow. But in a few years' time, enthusiasm is also expected to wane there. "Because Facebook is not really increasing the amount of ad inventory, while ad prices may be able to go up a little bit, there's going to be a certain ceiling that they're going to hit," said Blau. "And even if they have the ability to grow, it's going to be in a market where the users are not going to be as valuable, where the ARPUs (average revenue per user) aren't going to be as high as they are for example here in the United States." Facebook mentioned during the call that its app install ads were doing well, but didn't talk that highly about its new video ads. "If maybe they think that there's going to be a longer spin-up cycle on some of these new ad products, that could also contribute to potential slower growth later on." In an effort to combat stagnation, Facebook has been voraciously snapping up new growth opportunities and seeking ways to monetize new products such as Facebook Paper. This is also in keeping with one of founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg's favorite mantras: "move fast and break things." It wouldn't come as a surprise then if Facebook announced another spate of acquisitions and handful of product launches in a year from now. But realizing the revenue potential of all these new products and properties could take years and the question is whether investors will be patient enough to see Facebook through the slowdown in the meantime. "I think this is going to be one of the first big IPO tests for them," said Blau. Chances are, Facebook will be able to manage itself through the next three or four quarters while allowing these changes to happen and at the same time keeping investor sentiment positive; a testament that management has really matured. With its warning of markedly different growth rates ahead in Wednesday's report, Facebook has given analysts ample room to reset some of their expectations and the chance to build their models on that type of scaling back. Thus investors are unlikely to punish Facebook if anything goes wrong. More likely, they're going to recognize that Facebook has a plan in place to deal with slower growth, which is horizontal movement or expanding into different apps and services. Blau says he thinks Facebook will ultimately be successful in leveraging its new products to make up for the fatigue they're seeing in the main product. But it's not going to be any single new product on its own serving as an emerging growth engine. Thus, it's definitely not going to be Instagram alone because the product by itself does not have enough users; the user base is quite a bit smaller compared to the Facebook app. What will serve as a new growth engine is, for instance, an Instagram, plus a WhatsApp, plus an Oculus VR app, plus Moves, along with the spate of other properties it is likely to have acquired and new products it is likely to have rolled out by next year. It will be a core collection of apps that Facebook can monetize. "That would make up a new line of business for Facebook ... I think that it's very clear that that is what they're going to head towards," says Blau. "And if investors can see Facebook past the monetization of at least a portion of them, then they may be satisfied enough to give them the breathing room that Facebook needs." -- Written by Andrea Tse in New York Follow @atwtse

I have heard many people comment about the insurance policies for cars, houses, life, assets, etc. The arguments always revolve around the same issue: Is it really necessary? What are the chances to be hit by a Hurricane, or to meet a sudden death? Well, nobody really knows. Some individuals however, sleep better when they know a policy backs their life investments. Here, I will look into three insurance companies that concentrate on different policies, or geographies. These are: China Life (LFC), and Conseco (CNO).

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

Up first is CNO Financial Group (CNO), a mid-cap financial stock that's rocketed close to 60% higher since the calendar flipped over to January. Yup, it's been a great year for the market, but it's been a far better one for investors who own CNO. But that strong performance isn't showing any signs of slowing yet. In fact, CNO looks primed for even more upside in the fourth quarter.

That's because CNO is currently forming a bullish pattern called an ascending triangle. The ascending triangle pattern is formed by a horizontal resistance level above shares -- in this case at $14.75 -- and uptrending support to the downside. Basically, as CNO bounces in between those two technical price levels, it's getting squeezed closer and closer to a breakout above that $14.75 resistance level. When that breakout happens, it's time to become a buyer.

ACCO's price action isn't exactly textbook. After all, the pattern is coming in at the bottom of a downtrend, not after an uptrend. But ultimately, that doesn't change the trading implications of a move through that $7.50 level.

Whenever you're looking at any technical price pattern, it's critical to think in terms of those buyers and sellers. Ascending triangles and other pattern names are a good quick way to explain what's going on in a stock, but they're not the reason it's tradable. Instead, it all comes down to supply and demand for shares.

That $7.50 resistance level is a price where there has been an excess of supply of shares; in other words, it's a place where sellers have been more eager to step in and take gains than buyers have been to buy. That's what makes a breakout above it so significant. The move means that buyers are finally strong enough to absorb all of the excess supply above that price level.

Don't be early on this trade.

The payout ratio is an excellent tool for dividend investors. Without it, it's tough to judge how sustainable a company's dividend is. Though a lower payout ratio is always better than a high payout ratio, some companies can easily cope with higher ratios than others. In the video below, Fool contributor Daniel Sparks looks atApple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) , Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT  ) , and Waste Management (NYSE: WM  ) , illustrating how the ratio deserves careful attention during analysis.

Top Trucking Companies To Buy For 2014

The first quarter of 2014 is coming to a close, and it was a slow one for MLP IPOs. The only MLP that debuted in the last three months wasCypress Energy Partners(NYSE: CELP), but there are several others in the pipeline. Here is how the IPO landscape looks as we end Q1.

Cypress debuted on Jan. 14 as the first MLP IPO of 2014. It sold 3,750,000 units at $20 per unit. CELP is a growth-oriented MLP providing saltwater disposal and other water and environmental services to US onshore oil and natural gas producers and trucking companies in North Dakota and west Texas. The partnership agreement calls for a minimum quarterly distribution of $0.3875 per unit for each whole quarter, or $1.55 per unit on an annualized basis. At Friday closing price of $21.87, that translates into an annualized yield of 7.1 percent.

The next IPO may be Enable Midstream Partners, which was formed in May 2013 as a joint venture by affiliates of CenterPoint Energy, OGE Energy and ArcLight Capital Partners. Enable Midstream Partners filed its S-1 with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) back in November, and the offering had been expected in the first quarter of 2014. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Selena Maranjian]

Network storage specialist NetApp (NASDAQ: NTAP  ) , also held by this technology ETF, surged 38%. The company initiated a dividend this year, and it's yielding 1.6%. The company's operating system, ONTAP, has been rated well, and has gained market share, too. Some wonder whether NetApp might end up acquired by another major data player, such as Oracle, while others are hoping that an activist investor might help the company's prospects. Meanwhile, the stock is significantly shorted, and the company has announced layoffs, and boosted its share buyback plans. It still looks attractive to some, in part due to strong free cash flow.

Upon Liberty Global's (NASDAQ: LBTYA  ) successfully closing its acquisition of Virgin Media (NASDAQ: VMED  ) , Tom Mockridge will assume CEO responsibilities of the U.K. communications firm, Liberty Global announced today.

  • [By Markos Kaminis]

Whether the stock is overvalued or not does not matter at this point, because an impact to its subscriber base due to the data sharing news would probably change market expectations for the company's operations and affect both earnings estimates and valuation multiples. It would probably drive the shares lower in my view, and I see no reason to risk that by holding the stock. Long-term holders, of course, have tax considerations to consider, and the news is still filing out. If Verizon's peers are also implicated clearly, perhaps with the aid of a Verizon PR push, this issue would be effectively mitigated. Though even in that case, there could be market share loss by all major American firms, with companies like T-Mobile US (TMUS) and Virgin Media (VMED) benefiting, whether they have also been involved or not. In any event, for new stakeholders, or those willing to deal with tax implications; or for those interested in a potential short opportunity, I would sell the stock today. I see no reason to bear risk while this issue and its implications are still unraveling, and while VZ has thus far not been significantly discounted for it.

States About To Lose The Most Unemployment Insurance

Last week, after years of partisan fighting, Congress approved a two-year budget deal. Not included in the measure were any plans to extend the federal Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) program, which provides additional unemployment benefits for Americans who have exhausted their state-funded assistance. Should the program not be renewed, the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) estimates that 1.3 million unemployed workers will lose access to aid before the New Year.

If the program is not restored, by the end of 2014 4.9 million Americans will not receive EUC benefits they would have otherwise qualified for. If this happens, a number of states will have more than 100,000 residents who will lose access to federal aid. In California, more than 800,000 people could lose these benefits. Based on CBPP figures, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the 10 states with the most workers who stand to lose access to federal jobless benefits.

One of the most important factors influencing how many people could lose benefits within a state is the size of its population. In California, the nation's most populous state with 38 million residents, more than 836,000 workers are expected to lose access to EUC benefits next year. Eight of the 10 most populous states are among the 10 states with the most people losing benefits due to the expiration of the EUC program.

Because of the weak job market across the U.S., "workers are simply exhausting their benefits before finding a job," Claire McKenna, policy analyst at the National Employment Law Project, noted in an interview with 24/7 Wall St. According to the most recent 12 month figures from the Employment and Training Administration, 45% of the unemployed had lost their state-provided unemployment insurance benefits. In Florida, where more than a quarter of a million people stand to lose access to EUC benefits in 2014, 73% of unemployed workers had already exhausted their eligibility for state-sponsored programs.

The portion of workers unemployed for long stretches — for 15 weeks or more — is especially high in many of the states expected to be hardest-hit by the loss of federal unemployment benefits. As of the third quarter of 2013, eight of the states with the most workers expected to be most impacted by the cuts were among the top third of states for unemployment of 15 weeks or more.

While more than a million Americans wait to hear if they will lose unemployment benefits come December 28, many of the nation's unemployed have already lost the aid they depend on. Workers throughout the U.S. have had to contend with decreases in the benefits provided by federal programs. According to McKenna, the passage of the Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act last year, "led both to a phase out of the Extended Benefits program, and then it led to a phase down of the Emergency Unemployment Compensation program."

These changes reduced the number of weeks workers could receive unemployment coverage. In all, according to NELP, between 2010 and the twelve months ending in September 2013, the average monthly number of unemployed workers not receiving benefits rose by almost 1.8 million.

In addition to cuts to federal programs, changes to state policies have also played a role in increasing the number of unemployed, uncovered workers. McKenna added that seven states have cut the length of their programs "from the decades-long standard of 26 weeks." In six states, the average monthly number of uncovered, unemployed workers rose by more than 100,000 between 2010 and 2013.

Based on figures obtained from the CBPP, 24/7 Wall St. examined the 10 states with the most residents slated to lose access to EUC benefits in 2014. These figures include those who will lose benefits at the start of the year, as well as those who would have qualified had the program been continued in 2014. We also utilized data from the CBPP on the number of weeks unemployment benefits for workers are available in each state. Figures from NELP on state and federal benefit losses, based on averages from the 2010 calendar year and the 12 months ending in September 2013, were also used. In the article, the 12 months ending in September is referred to as simply “2013.” Additionally, we reviewed figures for state unemployment insurance programs from the Department of Labor's Employment and Training Administration, as well as long-term unemployment and underemployment rates from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). These figures represent 12 months of data through the third quarter of 2013. BLS figures on unemployment and non-farm payrolls are for November and represent the most recent figures available.

These are the states about to lose the most unemployment insurance.

Offshore Drilling: Here’s Why the Industry Imploded in 2014

As 2014 draws to a close, it will be remembered as an absolutely awful year for the offshore drilling industry. As we see in the chart below, the best performing offshore drilling stock is off 44% from its 52-week high, while others have fallen even farther.

SDRL Chart

SDRL data by YCharts

Here's why the industry imploded in 2014.

Early warning signs
Transocean LTD (NYSE: RIG  ) was the first to warn investors that 2014 could be a rough year for the offshore drilling industry. The company pointed out at an industry conference that it had 14 rigs coming off of contract in 2014 that didn't have new contracts lined up. Industrywide, a total of 39 rigs were expected to come off of contracts in 2014 at a time when a number of newbuild rigs were hitting the open seas. The reason so many rigs were without a contract had to do with the fact that oil companies were struggling to generate a lot of free cash flow even though oil prices were well over $100 per barrel as high costs were cutting deeply into the cash flow of oil companies. Because of this, oil companies were cutting back on deepwater drilling until either oil prices went higher or dayrates for drilling rigs started heading lower.

What we saw instead was a dramatic slide in oil prices that caught everyone off guard.

The unexpected slide in oil prices really exacerbated the offshore drilling industry's problems because it would make it even harder for oil companies to make money drilling deepwater wells. This forced the industry to take action to stay afloat as the industry really hit turbulent waters.

Taking action
Each company responded to the worsening industry in different ways. Seadrill Ltd (NYSE: SDRL  ) , for example, initially thought it could make it through the storm without making any major changes. The company's first action was to announce the delaying of the deliveries of a couple of its newbuild drillships by up to six months. The company said these delays were coming from the shipyards falling behind schedule. While that might be the case, we've seen other offshore drillers like Atwood Oceanics, (NYSE: ATW  ) pay extra fees in order to delay newbuild deliveries by six months hoping that the extra time would make it easier to find contracts for these rigs.

Source: Seadrill Ltd.

Meanwhile, other drillers like Hercules Offshore, Inc. (NASDAQ: HERO  ) handed out pink slips as it idled drilling rigs. In idling, or cold stacking rigs, the industry has taken some of the oversupply out of the marketplace. However, some companies, including Transocean, are permanently reducing supply by retiring the oldest and lowest-specification rigs. So far Transocean has retired 11 rigs and might retire even more. These moves do come with a price as Transocean has already taken $2.76 billion in impairment charges, including $788 million in writedown to the value of the company's rigs with another writedown of up to $140 million coming again in the fourth-quarter.

Cutting out older rigs aren't the only cuts being made by offshore drillers. Seadrill, which said its dividend was safe through 2015, with increasing visibility that it was safe until 2016 ended up cutting it all together as oil prices plunged. The company is going to use the $2 billion it's saving to buy back both stock and debt so that it can stay afloat during the turmoil in the market.

At the same time, drillers, like Ensco PLC (NYSE: ESV  ) , that didn't have a lot of debt heading into the crisis raised capital before things got worse. The company raised $1.25 billion in debt in the third-quarter while also increasing and extending its credit facility. Those actions enabled the company to increase its financial flexibility as it seeks to fund the seven rigs it currently has under construction. It acted early as it didn't want to be faced with closed credit markets when it needed cash to fund its contracted rigs.

10 Best Construction Material Stocks To Own For 2015

Investor takeaway
We saw the offshore drilling industry take a number of actions in 2014 as the industry's slump worsened when oil prices fell off of the table. These actions were all made in order to preserve the long-term futures of each company. The industry sees an incredible future need for drilling rigs as older oil fields deplete and new ones need to be discovered and brought online. While the downside of the cyclical industry made 2014 an awful year, the upside still hasn't changed. The world needs an incredible amount of oil in the years ahead and a lot of that oil will be delivered by the offshore drilling industry.

Aside from the bad publicity, which is never fun, we welcome recalls.

The General Motors recall offers at least four opportunities for business: fixing the recalled part, a roughly $250 cost for the Chevrolet Cobalt ignition switch fix which led the recall wave; other service and repair work; selling new cars; and, for those dealers with loaner car fleets, providing transportation to some waiting customers, paid for by GM. Several factors have combined to turn what started off as a pure public relations disaster into a strong sales year for some GM dealers. Dealers say GM has responded well to the crisis, with Chief Executive Officer Mary Barra publicly apologizing for failures and distancing the "New GM" which emerged from bankruptcy in 2009 from the "Old GM" which made many of the recalled cars. The automaker has also benefited from a growing economy, and the highest profile recalls, for ignition switches, mostly affect discontinued models. And last but not least, auto recalls have become so common with 29 million cars called in globally by GM and millions more by other brands, that consumers are suffering from "recall fatigue" and aren't paying attention, dealers say. "I think perhaps people worry less about the recalls than the newspapers do," said Herb Chambers, CEO of Herb Chambers Cos., the 14th largest U.S. auto dealership group with dealerships covering several brands in greater Boston.
